This observatory is under construction and not yet active. It is part of the WikiDeal observatories: citizen-run, participatory and volunteer-based.

The AI Strategies observatory is intended to watch how leading commons-based organizations define their AI strategies, and what WikiDeal could learn from them, following the logic of one observatory per subject. The entries below come from the earlier open observatories watch and form the starting material of this observatory.

Wikimedia Foundation

The Wikimedia Foundation adopted a "humans first" AI strategy (April 2025). Their four strategic axes, and how each could translate for WikiDeal:

  • Supporting moderators with AI-assisted workflows for knowledge integrity. For WikiDeal: supporting referents and validators with AI-assisted workflows for the legal integrity of contracts.
  • Giving editors time back by improving discoverability for human deliberation. For WikiDeal: giving contributors time back by generating initial drafts, leaving time for review and endorsement.
  • Helping editors share local perspectives via automated translation. For WikiDeal: helping users adapt agreements to local legal frameworks and languages.
  • Scaling onboarding of new volunteers with guided mentorship. For WikiDeal: scaling the onboarding of new users with guided assistance for their first deals.

Free Software Foundation

The FSF participates in the NIST AI Safety Consortium (since 2024) and advocates that the four freedoms must apply to AI. The FSFE argues that AI must be accessible, transparent and fair.

Mozilla Foundation

Mozilla champions "trustworthy AI" and libre alternatives to proprietary AI. It announced an "AI rebel alliance" (January 2026) to keep freely licensed technologies strong in the AI era.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

OpenStreetMap adopted a Moderation Policy on Chatbots and AI (June 2025). The community actively debates AI-generated contributions while maintaining data quality through human verification.

Debian Project

Debian passed a General Resolution on AI models and DFSG compliance (April 2025): AI models published without their training data and source code are not DFSG-compliant. This applies the highest standards of software freedom to AI.
