Market:Observatory/Whistleblowing

This observatory is under construction and not yet active. It is part of the WikiDeal observatories: citizen-run, participatory and volunteer-based.

The Whistleblowing observatory is intended for the early detection and prevention of abuse, and for the protection and support of whistleblowers at every step, from the first report to its resolution. This page describes the observatory itself: its watch mission and its reporting mechanisms. Mission

The observatory's early-warning role covers, in particular, alerts against any mechanism aiming at re-privatizing the platform, reducing trust, or weakening the approach of a global marketplace owned, run and sustained by its users. Like the other observatories, it is intended to produce watch reports and alerts feeding community debates and decisions.

Concrete examples of the drifts an alert could target (renewed speculative tendencies, unfair conditions that are hard to identify, potentially abusive dominant positions, facade adherence to WikiDeal values, mercenary rather than partner behaviour) are given on the Whistleblower protection page.

Reporting mechanisms

Following the principles already adopted on the wiki, the observatory would include:

• protected anonymous submission forms, with technical anonymization and data protection protocols, as a narrow, purposeful exception to the general no-anonymous-editing rule;
• a moderated review of every submission before any publication;
• publication in a dedicated section of the observatory, not as direct wiki edits.

Protection and support

Dedicated support persons would help whistleblowers formalize their reports. Both whistleblowers and those accused would benefit from protection from defamation. Protection and support are intended to cover every step, from the first report to its resolution.
