The need: fair resolution without lawyers
Picture Marc, who hired a babysitter through a WikiDeal contract, and Lea, the babysitter, who believes an extra hour was agreed verbally. Neither wants a lawsuit over a small amount. What they need is a neutral third party who understands the contract, listens to both, and decides quickly. This is the everyday use case the chambers are designed around.
The three levels
The design, inspired by Wikimedia's Arbitration Committee, escalates only when needed:
- Local chambers handle most disputes, close to the people involved.
- An intermediate instance, tied to a domain or portal (for example real estate or childcare), handles harder or recurring cases.
- An ultimate authority decides the most significant questions, using Condorcet voting and possibly public citizen debates with mixed panels of experts and ordinary members.
Who does what
- Parties present their side and provide the contract and evidence.
- Arbitrators (named and accountable community members) hear the case and issue a decision.
- The community can follow public debates at the higher levels, which keeps the process transparent and legitimate.
Why it matters for the ecosystem
Handling disputes inside the community supports two of WikiDeal's guiding aims: lower cost (no expensive intermediaries) and citizen participation (users themselves shape and staff the resolution process). Transparent, public reasoning at the upper levels is intended to build the kind of trust that no fine print can replace. The detailed procedures, eligibility rules and timelines are being documented progressively as the platform evolves.
